Mayfair Rotary and Capitol West Academy..........a community partnership.

Rotary District 6270 provides grants to its member clubs in order for the clubs to fund community projects that are found worthy following a review of the grant application by its Applications Committee.  Mayfair Rotary Club of Wauwatosa's project application was successful and was awarded the maximum $3000 grant.

The recipient is Capitol West Academy, located at 3939 N. 88th Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  CWA is a K4 - 8th Grade public school.  The Mission of CWA is to provide a safe nurturing educational environment where children, with the support of their families and the community, learn and grow to be successful lifelong learners and productive citizens.  The most recent official enrollment number is 287.  The pupil to staff ratio is approximately 22 to 1.  There are 13 classrooms, ten of which have 1 teacher and the three kindergarten rooms have a teacher and an aide.

Each of 13 classrooms in a school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were provided with a "Playground Pack" that was comprised of various pieces of sporting/play equipment.  Reserve Packs were also provided to cover the inevitable loss from wear and tear.  Further, the playground adjacent to the school was upgraded with additions to its physical property with a new basketball hoop and with various games (e.g Four Square), which were painted onto the playground surface.

It is impossible to overstate the positive impact on the community of a project that improves the quality of a child's educational experience.  We believe strongly that quality play-time is a major contributor to that experience.  The current state of the school's equipment and playground area, while managed carefully, was in need of a major overhaul and upgrade.  As the quality of its children's education is improved, the impact on the children's community is immeasurably positive.

The Club worked closely with the Executive Director of the Academy to review the equipment purchases and the installation of the basketball hoop. We had a working party of current members, member's spouses and a very eager young son of one of the members to do the sorting of the packs.  It was a very strong collaborative effort by the school and the club and has resulted in a most favourable outcome.  The club has received dozens of thank you notes from kids at the school, who are thrilled with the equipment and the opportunities it has presented.

The Club is grateful to the District for providing the funding for such a worthwhile project.
